Under the mentorship of Professor Pallu Reddanna, The biggest Bio-Incubator facility i.e. Bio-incubator Nurturing Entrepreneurship for Scaling Technologies (BioNEST) having 20,000 sq ft area, was inaugurated at University of Hyderabad on Wednesday, 28th February as a part of National Science Day celebrations.
It was inaugurated by Prof. G Padmanabhan, Padma awardee and Former director, Indian Institute of Science. He said: “I have seen five such facilities in the country but this BioNEST facility is the best among them”. He also urged women researchers to don the mantle of entrepreneur and establish start-ups.
Prof. E Premkumar Reddy, Director of Experimental Cancer Therapeutics, Mount Sinai School of Medicine, New York, said that the BioNEST will be one of the best in the country.
Prof. P Reddanna, faculty in the Department of Plant Sciences and the Principal Investigator for BioNEST, said the facility can accommodate 30 start-ups and can provide 16 benches for research. More than 350 PhD scholars and faculty members are available in the School of Life Sciences who can help in collaborations and consulting for the start-ups, he added.
With 20,000 sq ft area it will become a heaven for budding scientific talent of Biological Sciences field, Prof. Reddanna said. Furthermore, it is supported by the Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC), a unit of the Department of Biotechnology.
The facility is expected to bring together the high-quality researchers in the university and budding entrepreneurs either from the university or from outside to catalyse scientific enterprises that would focus on life sciences, biotechnology, healthcare and allied areas. The prospective entrepreneur will enjoy accessing the general facilities and instrument of the incubator as well as specialty instruments and facilities of the School of Life Sciences and UoH.
Note: Some news sources are reporting 2,000 sq ft area, which can be due to lack of information or typing error. The exact area of this bioincubator facility is 20,000 sq ft.
